Suzuno wears her high school uniform from Japan, which is dark blue with a red (original FY series) or white (Byakko Ibun/Senki) scarf that goes below the collar. Her skirt is pleated and long, reaching below the knee, pairing it with black tights and black Mary Jane shoes with it. When not in her sailor uniform, she's seen wearing kimonos.

Personality[]

"Tatara, we will always be together, always..."
—Suzuno to Tatara

Suzuno is a kind-hearted, quiet, slightly odd young girl, Having survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and been in the Universe of the Four Gods as a little girl has deeply marked her life: she has amnesia about what truly happened there, which led her to became a painter and make research in libraries in an attempt to get said memories back. She also has somewhat poor social skills; to people who do not know her, she comes off as a very talented but antisocial artist in the making.

Story[]

Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden[]

Born in 1915, Suzuno "Suzu" Osugi is the daughter of Takao Osugi, the assistant researcher of Takiko Okuda's father, Einosuke, who is the translator of Universe of the Four Gods. She considered Einosuke as her honorary uncle and Takiko as a big sister figure.

Suzuno is first seen in a photograph that Takao shows to Takiko, who happily coos over how cute she looks now. Midway through the series, Takao must return home since Suzuno is down with a huge fever; she briefly appears sometime later, asking Takao when will Takiko visit her.

Fushigi Yuugi: Byakko Ibun[]

Suzuno only shows up at the very end of this one-shot prequel to Byakko Senki, which is dedicated to the story of Neiran and Nirusha. She's seen as a teenager, praying: a note says that herself, Neiran and Nirusha's paths will not cross for "a little while".

Fushigi Yuugi: Byakko Senki[]

After the deaths of Einosuke and Takiko Okuda, Suzuno's father, Takao, is entrusted with the Universe of the Four Gods and returns to Tokyo. When an eight-year-old Suzuno asks about Takiko, he tells his daughter that she moved far away to be with the man she loves.

Three months later, on September 1st, Suzuno manages to obtain the book despite the precautions her father had taken to hide it from her. However, the Great Kanto Earthquake strikes at 11:58 AM. When the Osugi family home collapses on top of Takao, Tomoyo, and Suzuno, Takao begs his daughter to open the Universe of the Four Gods. She is safely transported inside the book; however, both her mother and father die in the earthquake.

Inside the book, Suzuno is found by a young Tatara. She meets his brother, Karumu Raotsue, and Neiran before returning to the destruction in Tokyo alone. Dr. Oikawa and an older boy named Seiji Horie quickly save her from child traffickers and take her in.

In 1933, ten years later, an eighteen-year-old Suzuno is about to finish high school and enter college. She and Seiji, plus two younger boys named Kenichi and Hidero, have all been adopted by Oikawa during the aftermath of the earthquake. Now a promising and skilled painter, Suzuno is plagued by nightmares and vague memories of her time inside the Universe of the Four Gods, in addition to serious doubts about her future. While Seiji had entered the military, Kenichi had decided to become a chef, and Hidero had already begun to help Oikawa in the clinic, Suzuno feels that she is two steps behind her adoptive brothers despite her talent at painting.

One day, she catches a glimpse of the Universe of the Four Gods book in her school's library. Curious, she researches its translator and uncovers the truth about Takiko and Einosuke's deaths. She fully recovers her memories about the book, including memories of her former life and her bond with Takiko. She discloses her discovery to Oikawa, who becomes terrified for Suzuno's safety. He warns her to stay away from the book, otherwise she will die like Takiko did.

After Seiji suffers a serious accident that put his promising military career in risk, he confesses his love to Suzuno before proposing. Torn between the idea of their childhood friendship and his intense feelings, Suzuno seriously considers accepting Seiji's marriage proposal. Needing some time to think, she finds her way back to the library and finds the Universe of the Four Gods once again. She takes the book home and decides to marry Seiji.

A few weeks pass and Suzuno, holding the book, is attacked by a group of Seiji's jealous acquaintances. The book's magic reacts to her distress and takes her back inside its pages.

Suzuno then becomes the second priestess of the book, the Priestess of Byakko, and she manages to: gather the Byakko no Senshi (starting with Tokaki), confront a false Priestess who takes her place, summon the Byakko without being devoured by him, and bring prosperity to Byakko's land of Sairou.

However, she falls in love with Tatara, and they are unfortunately parted when Suzuno is forced to exit the book. When Byakko is summoned, she wishes for both of them to be together; but Byakko claims that he is unable to grant the wish, since a Priestess' purpose is solely to summon the God and if she lives through the ordeal, she will be unable to stay in the land she blesses. Suzuno returns to the Real World with a sad and heavy heart, though determined to keep on living.

Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play[]

After her adventures in the book, Suzuno makes a home in the city of Morioka. She leads a quiet life with a normal family inside a traditional house, but she never forgets about Tatara and her Byakko friends.

In the manga, Keisuke Yuki manages to locate Suzuno in Morioka and speaks to her before she dies of old age. All of this happens off-page, and he mentions the results of his research and their talk to Miaka after Tatara's death in battle.

The anime expands on such matters, showing more of Keisuke and Tetsuya Kajiwara's quest to find information about Takiko Okuda's death and Suzuno's life. They find themselves in Morioka, and, in the middle of their search, meet Suzuno's grandson, Toki Osugi, who is dividing his time between his work and taking care of her aged, dying self. He takes them to Suzuno's home and Keisuke read her an excerpt from the book about Tatara's final moments.

Suzuno dies in the Real World at the same time as Tatara inside the book. Her spirit is last seen disappearing with the warrior's, finally reunited after many years.

She is indirectly mentioned of the Priestess of Byakko by Einosuke Okuda in his letter.[1]

OVA 1[]

While Tamahome and Miaka have been living together in the Real world, they, along with Yui, visit the graves of the priestesses of Byakko and Genbu.

Etymology[]

  • Her name Suzuno means "bell" (鈴) (suzu) and "from" (乃) (no).
  • Suzuno's surname Osugi means "big, great" (大) (o) and "cedar" (杉) (sugi).
