Gakurei is the reincarnation of the Suzaku warrior Chiriko. He was able to talk when Chichiri,Tamahome, and Tasuki found him, but would frequently burst out in the fits of a baby. A sign he was losing his knowledge of the past.
When Taka, Chichiri and Tasuki appear to find Chiriko, they find the baby Gakurei. In this, Tasuki was the one who held him and stopped him from continuing to cry, thereby enabling chiriko to continue the conversation.
