The Universe of the Four Gods (四神天地) is a fictional world based on different ancient periods of China and its mythology. Called "The Four Empires" by its citizens, its status as a book remains unknown to the people inside.

The Book[]

For more information, please go to The Universe of the Four Gods (book).

The universe takes the form of a handwritten manuscript written by Takiko Okuda's father, Einosuke Okuda. It made its way to Tokyo, Japan from China and can be found inside the restricted section of the National Library. The book acts as a portal to the ancient world to the chosen priestesses of the modern era, whenever and whoever that may be.

The first priestess is the aforementioned Takiko Okuda, who first opened the book and became the Priestess of Genbu. She is later followed by Suzuno Osugi, the Priestess of Byakko, and then Miaka Yuki, The Priestess of Suzaku, and Yui Hongo, the Priestess of Seiryuu, respectively.

Geography and Mythology[]

For a detailed world map, see The Universe of the Four Gods Map.

Split into four empires corresponding with the four cardinal directions, every realm in the Universe of the Four Gods is governed by an emperor and/or empress and is protected by a Beast God.

Hokkan[]

Guarded by Genbu, the Black Tortoise of the North, Hokkan is the largest empire out of the four. It is a vast, cold nation of dense forests, open plains, and mountain ranges. Its citizens are generally nomadic and are ruled by the Hokkan Imperial Family in the capital city of Touran.

It is the primary location of Genbu Kaiden, the story of the Priestess of Genbu, Takiko Okuda, and the Celestial Warriors of Genbu.

Kutou[]

Considered to have the strongest military power, Kutou is overseen by Seiryuu, the Azure Dragon of the East. Although this nation is known for its quarrels with other countries, it is second-smallest empire. Its flatlands and jungle-like forests are governed by the Kutou Imperial Family from the capital city of Shunrou.

It is a secondary location in the original Fushigi Yuugi anime/manga and is inhabited by Yui Hongo, the Priestess of Seiryuu, and the Celestial Warriors of Seiryuu.

Konan[]

The smallest of the four empires, Konan is protected by Suzaku, the Vermillion Bird of the South. Rich with trade and fertile soil, this nation was once a target of the famine-stricken Kutou. It has colorful geography of green mountains, forests, plains, and river towns but is plagued with intense rainy-seasons. From the capital city of Eiyou, this nation is ruled by the Konan Imperial Palace.

It is the primary location of the original Fushigi Yuugi anime/manga in which Miaka Yuki, the Priestess of Suzaku, meets the Celestial Warriors of Suzaku.

Sairou[]

This empire is guarded by Byakko, the White Tiger of the East. Famous for its deserts and scorching heat, Sairou is the second-largest nation. Because of its harsh environment, it relies heavily on trade and its sparse river systems. It is governed by the Sairou Imperial Family from the capital city of Arudo.

It is the main location of Byakko Senki and Byakko Ibun as well as a secondary location in the original Fushigi Yuugi anime/manga with Suzano Osugi as the Priestess of Byakko and her Celestial Warriors of Byakko.

Mt. Taikyoku[]

Mt. Taikyoku is located at the center of the world. Surrounded by ocean, it could be mistaken for a simple but large mountainous island but it is an epicenter for all spiritual connections of the four empires and beyond. Its guardian, Taiitsukun, assured that her palace at the center of the mountain is unable to be seen by those with impure intentions.

It is a secondary location in Genbu Kaiden and the original series.
